Timing belts require more maintenance than timing chains and need to be replaced every 60,000 to 90,000 miles. The mechanical timing controls the crankshaft and camshaft, as well as the movements of the pistons and valves within the engine. This small part is critical to your engine running properly, and if it breaks the results can be catastrophic. The timing belt system includes idler pulleys and a belt tensioner.
